ADOPT DON'T SHOP

Adopting a dog in comparison to purchasing a dog from a dog breeder, or pet shop certainly has many advantages as long as the dog in question is known thoroughly by the kennel, shelter, or authority, offering adoption.

Why should one consider adopting a dog?

There are many reasons for choosing adoption instead of purchasing your future family member

1. YOU WILL SAVE A LIFE

The most important reason is ‘you will save a life’. Purchasing from an official dog-breeder is not saving a dog’s life because the breeder is (or should be) a professional with the intention of increasing his or her business.

This maybe the most important reason of all reasons, or doubts, when considering purchasing or adoption. One gives an adoptive dog, or any other animal for that matter, a second chance in life. In their past lives they may have been abused, abandoned, or had to fend themselves on the streets. By adopting your future family member, one offers the animal a safe and loving home. It could possibly heal your future pet from mental traumas, and with much love and care, it can become a wonderful and happy companion.

2. FINDING AN AUTHORISED FACILITY

Adoption by a legally recognized kennel, or authority, will reduce the danger of potential buyers falling into the hands of rogue breeders who illegally breed dogs (and other animals) under dreadful conditions. It is common practice for such criminals to treat their animals with much cruelty and forms of captivity unacceptable for authorised kennels or authorities.

By choosing to adopt through official recognized channels one avoids these criminal businesses who have no interest in supporting animal welfare, but you certainly will!

3. PREVENT OVERPOPULATION

You help preventing over population of unwanted animals!

For example:

In the United States, six to eight million animals are brought to shelters each year, of which an estimated three to four million are subsequently euthanized, including 2.7 million considered healthy and adoptable.

4. FIND YOUR DREAM PET

One will have much more chance in finding one’s ‘dream pet’!

With thousands of animals in shelter, and so many pets who want to be cared for, one has a high chance to find a perfect fit. Not every dog or breed suits your lifestyle. Professional advice and multiple choices increase the possibility of finding a new family member who fits one’s specific requirements. Once a love affair begins with the dog (or animal) of your choice, the need to concentrate on a certain breed of animal disappears because once one ‘falls in love’ there is no turning back. Naturally, purchasing your pet can have the same effect, however, the multiple choice via adoption methods offer multiple choices which might alter one’s preferences.

5. ADVANTAGES OF ADOPTION ADULT DOG

Puppies are wonderful fun, no doubt, however, the advantages of adopting an adult dog are just as attractive as training a puppy to become your dream pet, and your slippers will remain intact!

Why? Because adult dogs are mostly housetrained and mostly respond to basic commands, which make life easier when your new family member enters your ‘castle’. Shelter, or street dogs, already are acquainted and socialized with other dogs.

6. SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY

One supports valuable community and charitable institutions!

7. ADOPTION AS A FORM OF THERAPY

Adoption is a form of therapy for one’s conscience, and naturally offers a financial advantage.

- Animals from professionally run shelters, kennels, or other organizations, are already vaccinated, sterilized/neutered, and microchipped.

- Breeders, pet-stores, and illegal breeders sell puppies (kittens or other baby animals) at high prices. It cost far less to adopt an animal from a shelter.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

To adopt a dog (or other animals) living in diverse institutions after being abandoned or mistreated, offers the opportunity to own a pet, which one is aware of the fact that this living being has suffered in some form or another, and this will be the beginning of a far greater ‘love affair’ compared to owning an expensive pet purchased directly from a breeder or pet shop.

Studies have shown that possessing a pet, or new family member, can help one live longer, whilst improving one’s overall happiness and health. Tests have proven that owning a wonderful, grateful, adopted pet can help people with depression, stress, anxiety, plus many other ailments.

The choice of adoption or purchase is up to the individual and this blog has only one intention, to enhance the wellbeing of both owner and the new ‘FAMILY MEMBER’.

Bless you both,
